Pilot Injection Engines

Zündstrahl-Blockheizkraftwerk für die Aufstellung in einem MaschinenraumderPilot injection engines work according to the diesel principle and are selfignition engines. Industrial diesel engines, which are adapted to gas operation through modifications, are frequently utilised.

With pilot injection engines only the energy required for igniting the fuel mixture is drawn from the injection system. Similar to an Otto engine, the main portion of the energy is provided via the suction system. These pilot injection engines are utilised in biogas block-type thermal power stations in order to burn biogas.

For this purpose the biogas is admixed to the combustion air by means of a gas mixer and ignited through the supplied ignition oil. In contrast to natural gas, biogas has a very high antiknock quality, and can therefore be drawn into these diesel engines without the danger of a spontaneous ignition. Adjustments are made so that the ignition oil portion maximally amounts to 10 % of the supplied fuel output.
