One of the world's most modern institutes for virus research, the Friedrich-Löffler Institute, can be found on the Baltic island of Riems. The complex consists of two 230 m and 210 m long buildings each with one or two underground and three aboveground floors. These contain

laboratories with the world's highest security level L4, where work on the most dangerous pathogens such as Hendra, Nipah or Ebola can be carried out.
